- 1948 born in Ingolstadt on the Danube (Bavaria, Germany)
- 1971-1977 Studies of law and ethnology at the University of Hamburg
- 1977-1982 Research fellow at the Max-Planck-Institut for Foreign an International Private Law in Hamburg. Member of the “Social-scientific research group” within the MPI.
- 1982-1996 Research fellow at the Centre for European Legal Policy (ZERP) at the University of Bremen
- 1984 PhD in sociology of law at the Free University of Berlin (supervisor: Prof. Dr. Hubert Rottleuthner)
- 1988/89 Research fellow at the Berlin Social Science Center
- 1995/96 „Habilitation“ at the Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main
- 1996-1999 Substitute professor at the Faculty of Law of the Hamburg University
- 1999 until end of March of 2014 University professor at the Faculty of Law and Economics of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg
- Since 2014 emeritus and researcher at the Center for Social Research in Halle, affiliated to the University of Halle
